Chamaerops Humilis - European Fan Palm Chamaerops Humilis is the only palm native to mainland Southern Europe and can be seen growing naturally along the Mediterranean coast. It forms in time impressive multiple trunks and is extremely architectural. It is integral to a Mediterranean style garden mixing well with other palms, broadleaf evergreens, cordylines, bamboos, bananas and olives. It is in fact completely at home in any exotic garden. Providing it is given a position in full sun with good draining soil and periodic doses of fertiliser this palm is extremely easy to maintain growing eventually 8 to 10ft.Tolerating a minimum temperature of -12c, perhaps even lower when mature, this palm is hardy in all but the coldest parts of the country. Chamaerops humilis is highly recommended for pot culture and will thrive in large containers for many years. (Spiteful thorned petioles make this palm unsuitable for young children.
