Dicksonia Antartica - Tasmania Tree Fern Dicksonia Antartica commonly known as the Tasmania Tree Fern is full of drama and to look up under its massive fronds transports you back to an era when dinosaurs ruled the earth - this is truly Jurassic Park at its best. These architectural ferns are indispensable in the sub tropical and tropical garden and are most certainly in my top 10 favourite plants. I defy anyone not to fall in love with them. They even look great in a traditional English garden. In the landscape they can be used in groups of varying sizes and under planted with hostas, blechnums and other shade loving lower growth plants. Their huge spreading leaves compliment bamboos and palms, whilst fatsias, eryobotryas, camelias, rhododendrons and bananas lend a contrast of leaf texture. Smaller examples of this beautiful tree fern such as those on offer below can be used to under plant mature palms to great effect. These ferns are carefully harvested from sustained forestry under license and transported as logs without root balls or foliage. It is very likely that when you receive your delivery foliage will either be sparse or completely absent -DON'T DESPAIR. Dicksonia antartica is painfully slow growing and requires a damp position in shade or semi shade planted in fertile soil and must be regularly watered to look its best. As soon as the weather warms up they explode into leaf with new fronds pushing up and expanding very quickly. If you are lucky enough to have an irrigation system place a drip in the top of the plant and allow the water to run down the trunk - the results are dramatic. Despite their delicate appearance they are surprisingly hardy tolerating temperatures down to -7 or -8c and even lower when mature. By the end of the winter the leaves may look tired or even dead if subjected to heavy frost but at the first breath of spring new foliage will emerge. Just cut off any dead or damaged previous season fronds. In heavy sustained freezes protect with horticultural fleece or similar. Further protection can be achieved by planting under a large tree canopy. Perfect for pot culture in large containers if kept watered and shaded from hottest sun. | * Please note that sizes stated are very approximate and the heights of the plants sent may differ from those in the catalogue. While we try to be honest in describing the size of plants, they are, after all, living things and two plants in the same batch, ostensibly the same 'size' may be very different from each other. Additionally, photographs of palms in the catalogue are often of mature trees and obviously young plants are likely to have a rather different appearance, taking many years, for example, to form a trunk. |
