| In
order to increase the extensive list of exotic plants hardy to our
cool climate we are constantly experimenting with new additions.
The
tree which first inspired me to a career in exotic garden design
was the flamboyant tree (delonix regia) which in botanical circles
is widely viewed as the most beautiful flowering tree in the world.
Unfortunately, it is not even remotely hardy in northern climate
gardens. There is, however, a rare close relative with similar lacy
foliage and spectacular flowers known as Barbados Pride (caesalpinia
pulcherrima) At present I don't know of any nurseries in the UK
offering this plant commercially.
I
have acquired a sizeable quantity of these beautiful shrubs and
am currently conducting trials as to their suitability for UK gardens.
The results so far have been very promising and I maybe importing
and including this shrub into future schemes, at least in the warmer
micro climate gardens of inner London. Watch this space.
