Urban Tropics: Contemporary Garden Design and Ideas

We offer modern contemporary and minimalist garden design ideas which are not just for gardens, but similar rules apply also to roof gardens, balconies and roof terraces with clean bold lines, strong shapes, absence of fuss, pure form, strong structure, and a sense of space and 21st century techno prevailing. Contemporary and minimalist design is ideal for London and city gardens and roof gardens, lending itself to entertaining and very low maintenance for those living life in the fast lane. However, it will equally suit those like me with a love of modern architecture and art.

Contemporary planting leans more towards a more minimal and structured design.. Adding colour should be retricted to fewer species like lavender or agapanthus, but used to make a statement in blocks of colour.

Emphasis is put on the hard landscaping with ipe smooth decking, or patios in smooth stone. White painted rendered walls with built in planters and informal seating, or walls and fences clad in Venetian cedar slats are great examples.

Accessories should compliment this area of design with stainless steel and glass tables and chairs, modern garden art, water features cubed planters of varying sizes all making perfect companions.

As with all our gardens, mood lighting is as an essentlassial ingredient, making the largest room of the house for living by night as well as by day. Finally, remember that contemporary does not mean gimmicky, and it is really important that the design will stand the test of time not looking dated in years to come.
